Joshua
Tree National Park
|
|
|
Located in Southern California, Joshua Tree National Park is offers
a great fall, winter, and spring getaway. As part of the California
Desert Protection Act, Joshua Tree was upgraded from a National
Monument to a National Park in 1994. The park has something for
everyone with hiking, camping, ample photography opportunities,
mountain biking, and world famous rock climbing. Daytime temperatures
in the spring and fall are on average 85°F and 50°F at night.
Winter is cooler with daytime temps of 60°F and 20-30°F
nights (make sure to bring a good sleeping bag). Summer temps can
reach over 100°F with little relief from the heat at night.
The atmosphere at Joshua Tree is very unique and cannot be adequately
portrayed in any picture. The terrain is different than any other,
the huge mounds of rocks with their unique angles and amazing balancing
acts make you feel like you've stepped onto another planet. The
campgrounds are full of laid back and friendly people, many of whom
have traveled long distances to enjoy the fantastic rock climbing
that the park has to offer. Every trip to Joshua Tree has always
resulted in great camp fire conversation and new friends. If you're
looking for a great getaway, check out this National Park.
Joshua Tree National Park is 140 miles east of Los Angeles. From
the west, take Interstate 10 and Highway 62 (Twentynine Palms Highway).
There are also north entrances to the park located at the towns
of Joshua Tree and Twentynine Palms. A south entrance at Cottonwood
Spring, (25 miles east of Indio) can also be accessed via Interstate
10.

on the map in the park publication, the Joshua Tree Guide. An unregistered
vehicle or a vehicle left overnight somewhere other than at a backcountry
board is cause for concern about the safety of the vehicle's occupants.
It is also subject to citation and towing.
Your wilderness camp must be located one mile from the road and 500
